The Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages is committed to offering a website that respects the privacy of our visitors. All personal information we collect is governed by the Privacy Act and our Privacy Notice.
Our Privacy Notice explains what personal information and user data we collect when you visit our website. We also explain why we collect this information, what we do with it, and how we protect your privacy by protecting that information.
What is personal information?
For the purposes of this Privacy Notice, “personal information” means any information relating to an identified or identifiable individual who is the subject of the information and “user data” means information automatically collected by the website or service providers about your use of the website.
Unless otherwise noted, we do not automatically gather any specific personal information from you.
Why we collect your personal information
In the course of providing online services through our website, we collect personal information for certain purposes. We use digital markers and web analytics to improve our site. We also use certain software to ensure the security of our website. These uses are described in more detail in the sections below.
When you visit our website
Web servers automatically collect certain information about a visit to a website, including the visitor’s Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses are unique numbers assigned by Internet Service Providers (ISP) to all devices used to access the Internet. Web servers automatically log the IP addresses of visitors to their sites. The IP address, on its own, may not identify an individual. However, in certain circumstances, it could be used to identify an individual using the site. For this reason, we consider the IP address to be personal information, particularly when combined with other data automatically collected when a visitor requests a web page. This information can include the name of the page you visited and the date and time of your visit.
Digital markers (including cookies)
A digital marker is a resource created by the visitors’ browser in order to remember certain pieces of information for the web server to reference during the same or subsequent visit to the website. Examples of digital markers are “cookies” or HTML5 web storage. Some examples of what digital markers do are as follows:
- they allow a website to recognize a previous visit each time the visitor accesses the site;
- they track what information is viewed on a site which helps website administrators
ensure visitors find what they are looking for. (for example: language or location), and to manage your session if you are logged in.
When you visit our website, we collect information about your visit that does not identify you personally, using a session cookie, which is a small file that is attached to your browser’s memory.
The information about all the visits to our website tells us the type of computer, browser, and web service our website visitors are using. We also know the date, time, and the pages viewed of each visit. When you leave the site, the cookie stops collecting information.
You may adjust your browser settings to reject digital markers, including cookies, if you so choose. However, this may impact your ability to interact with portions of the website.
Web analytics
Web analytics is the collection, analysis, measurement, and reporting of data about web traffic and visits. This data is used to improve our website and deliver on our mandate. It also helps us complete administrative tasks such as:
- communications and information technology statistics,
- audit and evaluation;
- research;
- planning; and
- reporting.
We use Google Analytics to collect this user data and analyze the use of the website. The information collected is sent to Google Analytics’ servers in an anonymous form. For more information please see: www.google.com/policies/privacy/partners/
Data collected for web analytics purposes goes outside of Canada to the United States of America and may be subject to the governing legislation of that country, such as the USA Patriot Act.
You can opt-out of analytics activity by setting your browser to notify you when a cookie is sent and block analytics cookies if desired. Please consult your browser’s Help Menu for instructions. Visiting our website with analytics cookies disabled will have no significant impact on your browsing experience.
Protecting the security of our website
We use software programs to monitor network traffic and identify unauthorized attempts to change information, or damage our systems. This software receives and records the IP address of the computer that has contacted our website, the date and time of the visit and the pages visited.

Collecting information about website visits helps us design the site to suit your needs and to improve users’ experience.
How we protect your privacy
We ensure that the user data we collect is aggregated so that it cannot be used to track any particular device or individual or identify you personally. We do not share or disclose the user data collected with third parties other than as described above.
How long we keep personal information for
The Commissioner of Indigenous Languages retains personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill those purposes for which it was collected, and to meet any applicable legal requirements, and otherwise for as long as is otherwise necessary for any purpose for which it can be lawfully used or disclosed by us.
At the end of that period, personal information is either securely deleted, or is anonymized and/or aggregated so that it can be used in a non-identifiable way for statistical analysis and business planning.
We may continue to keep personal information beyond this if we are legally required to for example to prevent abuse, fraud, or to resolve disputes.
Where we store and process personal information
Commissioner of Indigenous Languages stores and processes personal information in Canada.
Any transfer of your personal information will follow applicable laws including, where required, implementing contractual safeguards to ensure the level of protection equivalent to applicable laws, and we will treat such personal information under this Privacy Notice.
