September 30, 2024, Ottawa, Ontario – On September 30, the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages will join millions of Canadians as we reflect on the importance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Today, we reaffirm our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, particularly those related to language and culture. We call upon all Canadians to join us in this commitment, to listen, learn, and support the revitalization of Indigenous languages as an essential part of our collective journey towards reconciliation. Indigenous languages are fundamental to the identities, cultures, spirituality, relationship to the land, world views, and self-determination of Indigenous Peoples.
As we reflect on the past, we also look forward with hope and determination. We honour those whose memory we hold close and those now carrying the torch as they work to reclaim, revitalize, maintain and strengthen their languages.
They will never be forgotten.
