National Indigenous Peoples Day Statement 2026

June 21, 2026

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages joins all Peoples across Canada in celebrating the cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Indigenous languages are at the heart of identity, belonging, and ways of knowing. They carry the stories, teachings, and worldviews that have been passed from generation to generation since time immemorial. Despite the lasting impacts of colonial policies designed to disrupt their transmission, Indigenous Peoples continue to lead efforts to reclaim, revitalize, strengthen, and maintain their languages.

On June 18, 2026, the Commission released two new analyses developed in collaboration with Statistics Canada using data from the 2021 Census of Population. The reports, The Use of Indigenous Languages in Urban Areas in Canada and Silent Speakers of Indigenous Languages in Canada: A Socio-Demographic and Geographic Analysis, contribute to a growing understanding of Indigenous language vitality and highlight the importance of ensuring language revitalization efforts reflect the realities of Indigenous Peoples wherever they live.

Today, we honour the language champions, Elders, youth, educators, and communities whose dedication continues to create spaces for Indigenous languages to flourish. Their work supports the transmission of language, culture, and knowledge across generations.

As the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032) continues, the Commission reaffirms its commitment to promoting and championing Indigenous languages, including sign languages, across Canada. Together, let us celebrate Indigenous cultures and languages and continue to support and uplift Indigenous Peoples in their efforts to reclaim, revitalize, strengthen and maintain Indigenous languages for generations to come.
