Today on National Indigenous Languages Day, the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages stands together with Indigenous Peoples, and all Canadians, in celebrating the continued efforts of Indigenous language champions as they reclaim, revitalize, strengthen, and maintain their languages. This is a day for Canadians to reflect on the significant contributions of Indigenous languages to Canada’s linguistic and cultural history and diversity, as well as the importance of continued support for language revitalization efforts to shape a stronger Canada.
Aligning with the International Decade of Indigenous Languages and the mandate of the Commission, we remain committed to working with Indigenous language advocates and partners at all levels to uplift, support, and promote the language revitalization efforts of Indigenous Peoples with the aim of ensuring that all Indigenous languages in Canada are safe, vibrant, and thriving.
“Our languages are the cradle of our spirits, our traditional and scientific knowledges, and our identities. Today, we raise our hands to honour the steadfast and tireless commitment of Indigenous language champions, whose vital revitalization efforts are breathing life back into our languages and are standing them up in their rightful places in this country.”
-Commissioner Ronald E. Ignace
