The Commission is mandated to support innovative projects and the use of new technologies in Indigenous language education and revitalization, in cooperation with Indigenous governments and other Indigenous governing bodies, Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada and provincial and territorial governments.

Please note that, as outlined in the Indigenous Languages Act, the Commission is not a funding agency, and is not able to fund Indigenous language programming nor the infrastructure, or capital/operational costs of running an Indigenous language program.

Innovation Projects
The Commission has partnered with two Innovation Projects during the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
Na-Cho Nyäk Dun Holopresence Language Revitalization Initiative
Through a partnership between Na-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation and Carleton University, this project utilizes lifelike hologram technology to immortalize the Dän k’í language (Northern Tutchone). Language speakers and cultural practices will be documented within an accessible application (“app”) for language education and preservation.

Through a partnership between the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, Northwest Territories Linguistic Education Society, Nunavut Bilingual Education Society, and Inhabit Media, this project aims to dramatically advance kindergarten families’ literacy in Inuktitut and Gwich’in. Indigenous language audio recordings and corresponding literature will be distributed, accompanied by Yoto mini audio players, to create a portable learning environment rich in high-quality Indigenous language content.
