November 4, 2024, Ottawa, Ontario- The Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair.

As a respected lawyer, judge, senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Murray Sinclair dedicated his life to advocating for Indigenous Peoples. A trailblazing leader, he was pivotal in bringing to light the horrifying truths and legacy of Canada’s residential school system and forging the path towards reconciliation for survivors, Indigenous Peoples and Canadians alike. The Calls to Action emerging from the TRC ultimately led to the passing of the Indigenous Languages Act and the creation of the Commission.

“Honourable Sinclair leaves behind an astonishing legacy alongside other language warriors and champions that made it possible for the passage of the Indigenous Languages Act and the establishment of the Indigenous Languages Commission, which makes it possible for Indigenous Peoples to breathe life into our languages and to stand them to their rightful place in this country.”

-Commissioner Ronald E. Ignace

The Commission extends its deepest condolences to the Sinclair family during this difficult time.
